Know more about Parkinson
What is Parkinson?
Parkinson disease is a progressive neurological movement disorder which causes the decrease of motor functions in an individual. The entire body is controlled via the central nervous system which ends up getting compromised up to a certain extent. What this disease does is hamper certain nerve cells also known as neurons which are responsible for producing a chemical called dopamine.
This dopamine is responsible for executive as well as motor control both of which gets hampered in an individual suffering from Parkinson disease. With the progression of this disease, the level of dopamine decreases causing tremors as well as slow movement. Usually this disease starts between the age of 20 to 40 years from where it progressively becomes worse and is more prevalent in males as compared to females.
Being a neurodegenerative disease, Parkinson also leads to the buildup of a protein called alpha- synuclein which aids in communication within neurons.
Associated common symptoms of Parkinson
Listed below are symptoms that can confirm the prognosis of Parkinson’s disease in an individual with anxiety and depression, which are the most common initial signs of the onset of Parkinson’s.
Little to no movement
Severe posture issues
Insomnia
Dementia
Hallucinations
Urinary issues
Difficulty in breathing with very little speech
Types of Parkinson
It is not easy to distinguish between different types of Parkinson’s, considering its nature is extremely subjective and affects each individual differently. But broadly, it can be classified into 3 main categories.
These are :-
Idiopathic Parkinson
Idiopathic refers to a condition with an unidentified cause. It rarely occurs before the age of 50 and typically begins between the ages of 55 and 65. It develops gradually as dopamine levels fall and substantia nigra cells start to die. It is unknown what causes idiopathic Parkinson's disease, although changes in brain cells and neurotransmitters may be a factor.
Vascular Parkinson
Vascular Parkinsonism, as the name suggests, is a condition having a direct connection to the vascular system and is similar to Parkinson's disease. In this condition, the blood supply to the brain is often affected causing issues with movement as well as memory and sleep.
Drug Induced Parkinson
Any medication known as a dopamine antagonist that blocks the effects of dopamine is likely to result in Parkinsonism. A variety of drugs can produce Parkinson because they block the dopamine receptor, mimicking the symptoms of Parkinson's disease caused by dopamine cell loss in the brain.. The majority of the problematic drugs are anti-psychotics and anti-nausea meds, however other medications can also induce Parkinson.
